Choosing the right capacity

Cooling capacity is measured in BTU per hour. Undersize a unit and it runs continuously without ever reaching the set temperature; oversize it and it cools too quickly, shuts off, and leaves the room damp because it never runs long enough to remove humidity. Both mistakes cost you money.

Use the table below as a starting point, then adjust upward if the room faces direct afternoon sun, has large windows, a ceiling above three metres, more than three regular occupants, or heat-producing equipment such as kitchen appliances or servers. If the room falls between the two capacities, tell us what happens in it and we will make the call with you.

What both models share

T3 climate class

The tropical rating, printed on the rating plate. Specified and tested for high-ambient conditions rather than adapted from a temperate design.

R32 refrigerant

Roughly a third the global warming potential of R410A and more heat carried per kilogram, so a smaller charge does the same work. 0.95 kg in the AC14K, 1.25 kg in the AC20K.

Inverter compressor

Varies speed to match the load rather than cycling on and off. SEER 15.20 and SCOP 11.50 on the energy label — the top band on both scales.

IP24 and Class I

Rated IP24 for ingress protection and Class I for electric shock protection, on a 220V / 50Hz supply with a maximum operating pressure of 4.2 MPa.

Questions about the range

What does the T3 rating actually mean?

Air conditioners are rated for the climate they are tested in. T1 is temperate, T2 is cooler, and T3 is tropical — tested at substantially higher ambient temperatures. A T3 unit is designed to still deliver its rated output on the hottest days rather than derating or cutting out. Both MTK models carry T3 on the rating plate and a T3 badge on the outdoor unit.

Which refrigerant do MTK units use?

Both models use R32, charged at 0.95 kg in the MTK-AC14K and 1.25 kg in the MTK-AC20K. R32 is mildly flammable (A2L), which is why the rating plate carries a flame symbol — it is handled routinely by any properly equipped technician, but it does mean the system should only be opened by someone trained for it.

Is installation included in the price?

Installation is quoted separately, because the cost depends on pipe run length, wall type, bracket height and whether existing pipework can be reused. We give you both figures before you commit.

How much do they cost to run?

The energy label gives an annual figure based on standard usage assumptions: 881 kWh a year for cooling with the MTK-AC14K and 1,380 kWh for the MTK-AC20K, against a SEER of 15.20. Your real consumption depends on how many hours you run it, what temperature you set and how well the room holds it, but the label is the fair basis for comparing one unit against another.
