A fouled coil makes your air conditioner work harder, cool less and smell worse. A proper deep clean is the cheapest performance improvement available to any AC unit.
An air conditioner works by moving heat across two coils. Both of them need air flowing freely through their fins to do that. Dust, grease and microbial growth build up on the indoor evaporator, while sand and airborne debris block the outdoor condenser.
As the fins clog, airflow drops. The compressor runs longer to reach the same temperature, running current stays high for more of the day, and the coil can drop cold enough to ice over — at which point the unit stops cooling entirely. The same damp, dirty evaporator surface is what produces the sour smell that appears when the unit starts.
A wash-down of the filters helps, but it does not reach the coil surfaces, the blower wheel or the drain pan. Those need the unit opened up and cleaned properly.

A full deep clean once a year before the cooling season suits most homes. Twice a year in dusty areas, near building work, in kitchens, or for units running long commercial hours. Filters should be rinsed by the user every two to four weeks during heavy use.
Usually one to two hours per split unit, depending on how fouled it is and whether the indoor unit has to be removed from the wall for a full-strip clean.
If the cause is a clogged coil or filter, yes — often dramatically. If the cause is low refrigerant, a failing compressor or an electrical fault, cleaning will not fix it. We check while we are there and tell you which it is.
